Build Skills for Inspection, Travel, and Load Placement

Operating a variable-reach telehandler requires understanding balance, boom leverage, and ground stability:

  • Interpret Load Charts: Calculate safe capacities based on boom angle, extension, and attachments before lifting.
  • Pre-Shift Circle Checks: Inspect hydraulics, tires, fluids, and interlocks. Maintain the 3-point contact rule during cab entry and exit.
  • Three Steering Modes: Switch between front-wheel, four-wheel, and crab steering for tight sites.
  • Terrain & Frame Leveling: Level the frame on slopes or soft ground before elevating the boom to prevent tip-overs.
  • Safe Travel & Transfers: Travel with forks 4 to 8 inches off the ground and boom retracted. Practise smooth stacking and transfers without load damage.
  • Hazards & Emergencies: Maintain clearances from overhead power lines, respect wind thresholds, and execute tip-over protocols.
  • Ground Coordination: Work with spotters, establish swing radii, and keep active traffic corridors clear.

FAQs

What is the difference between a standard forklift license and a telehandler certification?

Standard licenses cover vertical-mast indoor trucks (Classes 1, 4, 5). A telehandler is a Class 7 Rough Terrain Forklift with a telescopic boom and four-wheel drive. Because telehandlers act like mobile cranes when extended, warehouse tickets do not permit you to operate them.

Is an online-only telehandler course legal in Ontario?

No. CSA Standard B335 and Ontario regulations require theory study and an in-person practical evaluation on real machinery. Online-only certificates do not satisfy Ontario jobsite standards.

How long is my telehandler operator card valid?

Certifications are valid for 3 years under CSA B335 guidelines. Operators must complete a practical refresher every three years, or sooner if involved in an incident or if workplace machinery changes.

Can I operate a Zoom Boom or a Lull with this certification?

Yes. “Zoom Boom,” “Lull,” and “Telescopic Handler” are industry terms for Class 7 rough-terrain forklifts. This course qualifies you to operate machinery from brands including SkyTrak, JLG, Genie, Cat, and Manitou.

How quickly can I complete the training?

Most courses take 1 to 2 days. Upon passing your written test and practical evaluation, you receive a temporary training record followed by your official 3-year wallet card.

Can I bundle this with other equipment certifications?

Yes. Many workers bundle telehandler training with our Boom Lift & Scissor Lift or Working at Heights courses to expand jobsite qualifications.
